The license you can actually carry across a line
As a compact member, Delaware issues multistate RN and LPN licenses to nurses who claim it as their primary residence. The privilege spares you from collecting a separate license in each member state where you pick up shifts, which counts for more here than in a large state: plenty of Delaware nurses work shifts within an hour's drive of two other states.
Do check each neighbor's current status rather than assuming, since implementation dates differ and a state that has passed legislation has not necessarily switched the system on. The compact also stops at registered and practical nursing. If you are past the threshold, you can contract with a practice, cover a locum stretch or run your own panel without arranging a physician relationship first. Three markets in ninety miles
New Castle County holds the bulk of the population along with most acute care beds, and it functions as part of the wider Philadelphia region, which deepens the pool of contract, per diem and specialty work. Wilmington and Newark carry hospital, outpatient and academic volume. Corporate and financial employers there also generate occupational health and case management work that nurses can take on contract.
Kent County around Dover mixes state government, an air base and a rural surround. Sussex County is the fastest-changing part of the state: retirees have moved to the coast in numbers, the summer population swells around the beach towns, and the agricultural and poultry workforce inland needs care that rarely gets staffed. Home health, hospice and long-term care hire per visit across all three counties, and that is often the simplest way into freelance work.
Working across the border
Because the state is narrow, cross-border practice is normal rather than exotic. A multistate license simplifies in-person shifts in member states nearby, but the deciding factor for remote work is always the patient's location: a video visit with someone physically located in a non-member state calls for that state's license, whatever your home license says.
For nurse practitioners the calculation is stricter, since APRN authorization does not travel. If you want a telehealth panel serving several states, you are applying to several boards and paying several renewal fees, and each state's collaboration rules apply to the patients located there. Students here are short of preceptors
Nurse practitioner students living in Delaware, whether at a local campus or enrolled in one of the national online programs, compete for a small pool of preceptors, and the pool shrinks further outside New Castle County.
