Where the work actually is, region by region
Southeast Michigan carries the weight. Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties hold multi-hospital systems, specialty centers and a large ambulatory footprint, which is where per diem pools, float assignments and short contracts concentrate. Ann Arbor adds academic and research work, Grand Rapids anchors a second dense market on the west side, and Lansing, Flint, Saginaw and Kalamazoo each support regional systems with their own staffing gaps.
North of the bridge and across the northern Lower Peninsula the picture inverts. Critical access hospitals, small clinics and long driving distances mean a single clinician often covers a service line alone, which is why travel contracts and locum coverage pay better up there than the cost of living suggests. Tourist seasons around Traverse City, Petoskey and the Upper Peninsula lift summer volumes, and Veterans Affairs facilities in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Battle Creek, Saginaw and Iron Mountain hire outside the state system entirely.
One state, one license, and what that costs you
NCSBN's compact map shows no multistate licensure law in force in Michigan. Practically: a nurse living in Ohio or Indiana with a multistate license cannot pick up a Michigan shift on it, and a Michigan resident cannot convert an existing license into a multistate credential. Licensure runs through the Bureau of Professional Licensing at the state's Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, and cross-border work means holding each state's license separately.
For remote work the governing question is where the patient sits, not where you sit. A telehealth company covering Michigan residents needs you licensed in Michigan; a national panel will expect several licenses, each renewed and paid for on its own cycle. That overhead is exactly why chart review, utilization review and precepting appeal to nurses who would rather not maintain a wall of licenses. Remote lanes differ a lot on this point.
Delegated authority and the freelance NP
AANP classifies Michigan as a restricted practice state, its label for statutes that keep another discipline supervising, delegating to or managing a nurse practitioner for the length of a career. In practice a nurse practitioner here prescribes and treats through a delegating physician relationship, and that relationship has to exist before you can bill independent work. Freelance NP contracting is still common, but the delegation arrangement is a term of the contract, not an afterthought, and it is the first thing to check when a locum or telehealth offer arrives. The advanced practice compact drafted nationally is not operative, so nothing about that changes by holding a license elsewhere.
Student demand, and why psychiatric hours are scarce
Michigan hosts a wide spread of nurse practitioner programs, from campus programs in the southeast and west to the online programs that enroll residents in every county, and each of them has to find clinical sites for students. Psychiatric mental health placements are the tightest, particularly outstate; with pediatrics and women's health not far off; primary care sites in the northern counties field requests constantly because there are so few of them.
How many hours may be logged over video is a decision the student's school makes and writes into the rotation, not something you or this network sets. Behavioral health rotations often carry a larger remote portion than a family practice rotation does. You will see that split in advance and can decline any match that does not suit your clinic.
The band, the block, the two deposits
Your rate is yours to choose, anywhere between $12 and $20 per student hour. One block equals 120 student hours; do the multiplication and a block is worth $1,440 to $2,400. Half arrives after the midpoint evaluation is submitted and the balance after the final one. The nurse pays nothing to take part, and once a calendar year totals $600 or more a 1099-NEC is issued. Taxes, credits, and getting started
Michigan runs no preceptor tax credit. Several states do, most of them paying only for uncompensated teaching, which paid blocks would not qualify for in any case, so the useful work here is federal: quarterly estimates, contractor deductions, and a preparer who has seen 1099-NEC income before. Eligibility is short. Hold an active license with no discipline attached, hold national certification in your student's population, and be two years past that certification. Nurses with an MSN who teach or hold a management post can precept education and leadership practica instead. The program-to-practice agreement is arranged for you, and you can put your name in at the application page without committing to a term.
Questions
Can I use a compact multistate license in Michigan?
No. Michigan never joined, so the multistate card a colleague carries from Indiana or Ohio does not cover a shift here, and you would apply to the state for a Michigan license by endorsement. The reverse holds too: a Michigan license on its own does not let you see patients located in other states, in person or by video.
What does restricted practice mean for an NP taking contract work?
It means state law keeps a physician in the loop through delegation for elements of your practice, including prescribing. Contract work is still available, but the delegating relationship has to be named and documented in whatever arrangement you sign. Ask any locum or telehealth employer who holds that relationship and what happens to your authority if that person leaves the practice.
How much clinic time does one preceptor block take?
A block is 120 student hours arranged across a semester on days you choose. The first fortnight is the slow part, since you are narrating your thinking as well as seeing patients. After that most preceptors report the student absorbing histories, documentation and follow-up calls, which puts the day back close to its usual pace.
Does precepting count as employment with the school?
No. You precept as an independent contractor, so no employment relationship forms with the school or with this network. That is why the payment carries a 1099-NEC rather than a W-2, why nothing is withheld, and why quarterly estimates are your responsibility. It also means you keep control of your schedule and the number of students you accept.
Do rural Michigan practices get asked to precept more often?
Outstate and northern practices get asked disproportionately, because there are simply fewer sites per student in those counties and psychiatric and primary care placements are thin. If you practice north of Clare or in the Upper Peninsula, expect steady interest once you are listed, and expect programs to ask about supervision coverage on the days you are away.
