The compact, and the border it does not cross
New Hampshire has been a compact jurisdiction for many years and remains one, so residence here brings a multistate RN or LPN license usable in every other member state. Maine and Vermont are members, which makes work across the Connecticut River or up the Seacoast simple. Massachusetts is not, at least not yet: it enacted the compact in late 2024 but implementation is still being built, with a target in 2027, so covering shifts in Lawrence, Haverhill or Boston today means holding a Massachusetts license as well.
That matters more here than almost anywhere, since so much of the southern tier lives in New Hampshire and works in the Merrimack Valley or Greater Boston. It applies equally to telehealth, where the license you need is the one covering the patient's location. Keep an eye on the NCSBN map: when Massachusetts finishes implementing, the calculation for everyone in Nashua and Salem changes overnight.
Nurse practitioners work on their own license
AANP files New Hampshire under full practice, a status it reached earlier than most states did. An NP evaluates and diagnoses, orders and reads testing, treats and prescribes without a collaborating physician contract behind it, which lowers the cost of independent work considerably: there is no collaboration fee to negotiate into a locum rate or a telehealth per-visit figure.
Two things still belong to you rather than an employer. Your prescriptive credential and federal registration for controlled substances travel with you between contracts and need maintaining. And the advanced practice compact drafted at national level has not taken effect, so advanced practice authority does not travel across state lines the way your RN license now does.
The market from Nashua to Colebrook
The southern tier around Manchester and Nashua holds the largest concentration of hospitals, ambulatory sites and staffing demand, and it competes directly with Massachusetts employers for the same nurses, which tends to hold per diem rates up. Concord serves the center of the state, the Seacoast around Portsmouth and Dover reaches into Maine, and the Upper Valley functions as an academic referral center for both sides of the Vermont border.
North and west the picture changes to critical access hospitals, home health and hospice covering long distances, particularly through the North Country. New Hampshire has an older population than most states, so home care, hospice and long-term care carry steady per diem demand year round. Tourism adds its own rhythm: lakes and mountains in summer, foliage traffic in autumn, and ski injuries filling urgent care from December onward.
Precepting: where the students are stuck
Nurse practitioner students in the state come from local campus programs and from online programs enrolling residents here, and both need clinical sites in a small state whose practices are already busy. Psychiatric mental health rotations are the scarcest, in line with how stretched behavioral health services are. Family practice and pediatrics north of Concord get asked repeatedly, and women's health placements are thin outside the metro areas.
How much of a rotation can run by video is decided by the school and stated in the rotation terms in advance. Psychiatric rotations usually carry the biggest remote allowance, which helps when a student lives two hours away through the notches. You see the terms before committing, and no explanation is required if you pass on a match.
What a preceptor earns
Your rate sits wherever you put it between $12 and $20 per student hour. With 120 student hours in a block, a finished block pays somewhere in the $1,440 to $2,400 range. It is released in two payments, the first when the midpoint evaluation is complete and the second after the final one. Taking students costs the nurse nothing. Tax treatment and getting listed
New Hampshire does not tax earned income, and the old tax on interest and dividends has been phased out, so there is no state return waiting for this money and no state preceptor credit to pursue. Federal treatment is unchanged: self-employment tax, quarterly estimates, and deductions to discuss with a preparer rather than guess at. If you also work in Massachusetts, remember that income sourced there follows Massachusetts rules, which is a question for your preparer rather than for us.
Requirements to precept are few. Keep an active license free of encumbrance, carry current national certification for whichever population your student will serve, and be two years past that certification. Nurses holding an MSN who teach or run a unit now have their own route, taking practicum students in education and leadership. The affiliation paperwork sits between the school and your practice, arranged for you, and applying takes minutes.

Does my New Hampshire multistate license cover work in Massachusetts?
Not at present. Massachusetts enacted the compact in late 2024 but has not finished implementing it, with a target during 2027, so you need a Massachusetts license to work there or to see patients located there by video. Less than most people expect after the first fortnight. A block runs roughly 120 student hours through a semester, scheduled on days of your choosing. Early on you are narrating your thinking, which slows the pace. Once oriented, a student takes histories, drafts documentation and handles follow-up calls, and the schedule settles back close to normal.
Is there a New Hampshire tax credit for precepting?
No. The state has no personal income tax on earned income, so there is no state liability for a credit to reduce. Other states that operate preceptor credits usually restrict them to unpaid teaching, which paid blocks would not meet in any case. Your planning work is federal: estimated payments and contractor deductions, reviewed with a preparer.
Can I precept if I hold an MSN but am not an NP?
Yes, on the education and leadership track. Hold an MSN, teach or manage now, and you can supervise practicum students whose work is teaching, quality or leadership based. Clinical rotations for nurse practitioner students require someone certified in that same population focus, so the two paths do not substitute for each other.
