The compact reached Vermont in 2022
Before that date a Vermont license worked in Vermont and nowhere else without a separate application. Now, if this is where you primarily reside, the Board of Nursing will grant a multistate credential usable for shifts, short contracts and remote triage throughout the other member states. Direction counts for more than distance, because your privilege sits wherever the patient sits. New Hampshire has been a member for years, so the Upper Valley works both ways. New York never joined, so Plattsburgh or Albany work needs a New York license. Massachusetts has enacted the compact without switching it on.
Full practice, after the transition
AANP puts Vermont in the full practice category, and the qualifier sits at the start of a career rather than running through it. An advanced practice nurse with fewer than 24 months and 2,400 hours of licensed advanced practice in the role and population works under a formal agreement with a collaborating provider, who can be a physician or an experienced APRN in the same specialty. Hours earned in other states count toward the total. Clear it and the agreement ends, prescribing included. No multistate advanced practice license exists to lean on, so NP licensure stays state specific.
A rural market with one metro
Chittenden County and Burlington contain the state's academic medical center, plus the greater share of salaried and per diem postings. Everything beyond is small: critical access hospitals, federally qualified health centers, school health, and a home health and hospice sector carrying an aging population spread over hill towns. Two seasons move staffing, the ski months through the north and center, then the summer and foliage stretch when the population swells. Precepting in a small state
Vermont graduates few nurse practitioners of its own, and many residents study through distance programs that expect the student to find clinical hours unaided. A small pool of practices therefore absorbs a steady flow of requests. Psychiatric mental health rotations are the scarcest, matching both the national pattern and this state's own treatment demand. Beyond Chittenden County, hours in pediatrics and in women's health are genuinely limited. Family and adult gerontology are the most common requests and still take patience in the Northeast Kingdom. The pay, plainly
A block runs 120 student hours. The hourly number is yours to pick, provided it stays between $12 and $20 per student hour. Multiply that out and a block lands at $1,440 to $2,400. Who can take a student
The requirements are an active license with nothing against it, a national board credential in the student's population, and two years of practice since that credential was issued. Nurses who hold an MSN and are teaching or managing right now can oversee education and leadership practica rather than a clinical block. Vermont runs no preceptor tax credit, so nothing offsets the work at state level; the payments are self-employment income federally, and quarterly estimates are a conversation for a preparer. Does a Vermont multistate license let me work in New York?
It does not. New York remains outside the compact, so shifts in Plattsburgh, Glens Falls or Albany require a New York license by endorsement, and so does telehealth with a patient sitting there. New Hampshire is a member, which is why Upper Valley nurses move back and forth easily. Massachusetts sits in the enacted-but-not-yet-running column.

That belongs to the program, not to you and not to this network. Psychiatric blocks tend to allow generous video hours because the work is interviewing and medication management. Is there a Vermont tax credit for preceptors?
No. Several states do offer one, usually restricted to preceptors who teach without payment, and Vermont has not adopted anything comparable. Since this network pays you, those credits would seldom apply regardless. Handle the income as ordinary contract earnings, keep mileage and expense records through the year, and let your preparer rule on deductions.
