One license across the whole border
Your multistate license comes from the state RN board when West Virginia is where you primarily live, and it covers work throughout the other member states with no second application. Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia and Maryland have been in for years, and Pennsylvania joined in July 2025, which mattered to nurses around Wheeling, Morgantown and the northern panhandle. Keep the direction of the rule in mind: the privilege belongs to the state the patient occupies, not the one holding your desk, so remote work is licensed wherever the patient happens to be. Advanced practice falls outside all of it.
Reduced practice, and the three-year exit
For prescribing, West Virginia expects an advanced practice registered nurse to hold a collaborative agreement with a physician. That document lays out guidelines or protocols, describes what each party is responsible for, and gets reviewed and updated jointly on a schedule. Collaboration rather than supervision is what puts the state in the reduced category instead of the restricted one. After at least three years of documented collaborative practice with prescriptive authority granted, you may petition the board to prescribe without the continuing agreement. Some controlled substances carry statutory limits of their own, so read the board's current rules rather than assuming federal registration settles everything.
Three corners and the coalfields
Charleston and Huntington anchor the southwest, Morgantown carries academic medicine in the north, and Martinsburg with the Eastern Panhandle keeps growing on the back of the Washington commuter belt. Wheeling, Parkersburg and Beckley run smaller markets. The population is among the oldest anywhere in the country and carries a heavy chronic disease burden, which keeps home health, hospice, dialysis and long-term care busy year round. Out in the coalfield counties, access narrows to community health centers, rural clinics and mobile programs. Addiction and behavioral health work is everywhere and short-handed. Where students cannot find anyone to teach them
Nurse practitioner students here compete over a small number of teaching practices, and many study at a distance with no placement office behind them. Hardest of all to fill is psychiatric mental health, which in a state near the center of the overdose crisis counts as a real problem rather than an inconvenience. Pediatrics and women's health grow thin past the three main cities. Family and adult gerontology hours attract the most requests and take longest to arrange in the southern counties. Each school decides how much of a rotation may run remotely, and that decision varies from one school to the next.
The rate and the block
Teaching is booked as 120 student hours to a block. You set the rate, and the network's band opens at $12 and closes at $20 per student hour. That prices a block at $1,440 to $2,400. Two deposits follow: the midpoint evaluation releases the first, the final evaluation releases the second. Nothing is charged for taking part and nothing is skimmed off your rate. Eligibility, and the tax side
The requirements are short. An active license clear of discipline, a current national credential in the population the student will practice in, and two years of your own practice since that credential issued. An MSN-prepared registered nurse who is teaching or managing at the moment can supervise education or leadership practica. West Virginia has no preceptor tax credit, so no state offset exists for the hours you give. Federally this is self-employment income, and estimates and deductions are questions for a preparer. When can I prescribe without a collaborative agreement?
West Virginia law lets an advanced practice registered nurse apply to the board once at least three years of documented collaborative practice with granted prescriptive authority are behind you. Until that authorization comes through, the agreement stays in force and has to meet the statutory content requirements. Check the board's current process directly, since the paperwork and the evidence it wants are specific.
Can I take shifts across the line in Pennsylvania?
Yes. Pennsylvania implemented the compact in July 2025, so a West Virginia multistate license now reaches it without a separate application. Ohio, Maryland, Virginia and Kentucky were already members, which means every neighboring state is open to you. Facility credentialing still takes its own time, so the license is the beginning of the process rather than the end of it.
Is precepting a psychiatric student different from precepting a family student?
The teaching rhythm differs. Psychiatric blocks lean on interviewing, risk assessment and medication management, so schools often permit more of the hours by video. Family rotations turn on examination and procedures, which keeps students in the room with you. Either way the school sets the limit, you supervise live, and you review and sign what the student documents.
Does West Virginia give preceptors a tax credit?
No. Several states have written credits for clinical preceptors into their tax codes, generally for teaching done without pay, and this state has not. The precepting payments you receive are ordinary contract income for federal purposes. Keep mileage, supplies and any continuing education receipts through the year and let a preparer work out which of them count.
